Brickwork and garden walls in Aberdare and Merthyr Tydfil
A wall that looks good but sits on poor foundations can lean or crack within a few winters. Good bricklaying starts below ground with the footing, then attention to damp-proofing, coping and drainage.
Draft scope: owner must confirm this service, its materials and exclusions before launch.
Who this is for
Homeowners building new garden or boundary walls, repairing damaged brickwork or repointing worn mortar.
Signs you may need it
- Leaning, bulging or cracked walls
- Crumbling mortar or spalling bricks
- A new boundary or raised bed
- Storm or impact damage
What is included
- Rebuilding or repairing sections of walling
- New block and brick walls on appropriate foundations
- Repointing in suitable mortar
- Copings and piers
- Matching existing brick where reasonably possible
What is not included
- Walls retaining significant earth or any wall needing engineered design
- Party-wall procedures, which are the owner’s responsibility to start
- Structural repairs to the house
Options and materials
- Facing brick. Wide range of colours and finishes; matching older brick is difficult.
- Block with render. Economical and robust; finish needs separate quote.
- Stone or reclaimed material. Possible by agreement; availability varies.
How the job runs
- Enquiry. Tell us what you can see and where the property is. Photos help but are not required at this stage.
- Site assessment. We check wall height, ground, existing structure and neighbouring boundary issues.
- Written quote. You receive the scope, materials and price in writing so you can compare it like for like.
- Preparation and work. Access, protection of the surrounding area and timing are agreed before work begins.
- Handover. We walk through what was done, tidy up and remove waste. Ask us for any paperwork you need.
What affects the cost
We do not publish fixed prices because every property differs. The main factors are:
- Length and height
- Foundation depth
- Brick or block choice
- Access for materials
- Repointing area and mortar type
Price guidance
We only publish prices the owner has approved, and none are published for this service yet. Every quote is based on the factors above.
Access, disruption and weather
- Boundary walls can involve neighbours; talk to them early.
- Mortar needs dry, frost-free conditions.
- Tall free-standing walls and retaining walls may need design input.

Questions
How high can a garden wall be?
Planning rules limit boundary heights in some cases. Check with the council for your property before committing.
Why does repointing need the right mortar?
A mortar that is harder than older bricks can damage them. The mix should suit the existing walling.
Can you repair part of a wall?
Often yes. If the foundation has moved, repairing the face alone will not last.
