Patio installation in Aberdare and Merthyr Tydfil
A patio is only as good as what lies under it. Excavation depth, a compacted sub-base, correct falls for drainage and well-made joints matter more to longevity than the paving itself.
Draft scope: owner must confirm this service, its materials and exclusions before launch.
Who this is for
Homeowners wanting a new patio, replacing an old or uneven one, or extending an existing terrace.
Signs you may need it
- Uneven, sunken or slippery existing paving
- A garden that floods in one area
- New outdoor seating or dining space
- A new extension needing a patio at the threshold
What is included
- Measuring up and agreeing layout and levels
- Excavation and disposal of spoil
- Compacted sub-base and bedding layer
- Laying and cutting the chosen paving
- Pointing or jointing
- Edging and finishing to adjoining areas
What is not included
- Planting and soft landscaping unless quoted
- Retaining walls and structural walls, which are separate work
- Utility diversions
Options and materials
- Natural stone (e.g. sandstone). Distinctive character; surface and thickness vary by supplier.
- Porcelain paving. Hard-wearing, low-maintenance surface; needs appropriate adhesive and primer.
- Concrete paving. Wide choice and lower cost; colour can fade over time.
How the job runs
- Enquiry. Tell us what you can see and where the property is. Photos help but are not required at this stage.
- Site assessment. We measure, check levels, drainage and access for machinery, and discuss materials.
- Written quote. You receive the scope, materials and price in writing so you can compare it like for like.
- Preparation and work. Access, protection of the surrounding area and timing are agreed before work begins.
- Handover. We walk through what was done, tidy up and remove waste. Ask us for any paperwork you need.
What affects the cost
We do not publish fixed prices because every property differs. The main factors are:
- Area and layout
- Material choice
- Excavation depth and spoil removal
- Access (can a mini-digger get in?)
- Drainage and edging details
Price guidance
We only publish prices the owner has approved, and none are published for this service yet. Every quote is based on the factors above.
Access, disruption and weather
- Spoil and deliveries need space; tell us about narrow access or steps.
- Rain delays excavation and mortar work.
- Your lawn and borders may need reinstatement beyond the patio edge.

Questions
Do I need planning permission?
Most domestic patios do not, but rules differ for raised or front-garden surfaces and for impermeable areas. We can discuss what to check.
How is drainage handled?
The patio is laid with a slight fall away from the house and any damp-proof course. Where water cannot run off naturally, drainage may be added and priced separately.
Can I choose my own paving?
Yes, but tell us before the quote so the base and fixings suit the material.
